Does Shaving Promote Hair Growth?

You may have heard, at some point, that shaving leads to a fuller and thicker hair growth.

Is this true?

The short answer is no, this is an old wive’s tale oops! I mean non-gender specific human of older age who’s in some sort of civil union’s tale.

Possible Origin Of This Myth

Shaving your facial or body hair can give the hair a blunt tip, which may fool you into thinking it feels fuller or more stubbly as it grows out.

It may also look slightly darker in the early stages of regrowth, but this is caused by the hair not having (yet) been exposed to environmental elements like sunlight, shampoo, soap and other chemicals your body comes into contact with.

Science Says No

Clinical studies were done as far back as 1928 which debunked this common myth, yet nearly 100 years later you still hear it from time to time.

So if you’re trying to grow your beard, put the razor down and be patient.

Patchiness or unevenness in the early stages of growing a beard are common, and often fill in as your beard comes in.
